Where to Eat in Budapest?
Budapest Restaurants

Budapest Restaurants Logo

A wide selection of Budapest restaurants. Mmmmm.... Which one to choose? You'll definitely ask yourself this question after a whole the day of tiring sightseeing in the city.

Do you want to sit in a cosy little restaurant, have delicious food and just relax? Perhaps do you wish to try traditional Hungarian dishes? Are you a vegetarian and looking for a vegan restaurant?

Our Budapest Restaurant Guide helps you to choose the right place to eat, suitable to both your taste and budget. Budapest has the advantage that you can have good meals at affordable prices.

Gluttonous Thursday (Torkos Csütörtök) in Budapest Restaurants 23rd February 2012 - Pay 50% less - eat and drink half price in the participating restaurants. An excellent opportunity to try the Hungarian cuisine and wines. Reservation is highly recommended because the program is very popular among locals. More information on participating restaurants is at Torkos Csutortok.

The city has some exclusive restaurants too where you have to dig deeper in your purse.

A bad restaurant experience can ruin your whole visit. Let us give you a helping hand using our local knowledge. Of course we haven't had the chance to test all Budapest restaurants, but we'll do our best to gather reliable and useful information to help you decide where to eat.

Budapest has more than 1,000 restaurants and other eateries. Besides restaurants offering Hungarian dishes, you can taste every major world cuisine, as well.

You'll also find exotic Budapest restaurants like: Mongolian, Russian, Middle Eastern. Sushi fans won't stay hungry either; there are a couple of Japanese restaurants in Budapest. Budapest has now a few quality vegetarian restaurants too.

If you're in a hurry and don't mind eating in a fast food restaurant you have a wide selection to choose from including MacDonald's, KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut and others.

The eateries on the upper floor of the Great Market Hall or the Fehérvári úti Food Market offer good alternatives to fast food restaurants. You can have substantial and tasty Hungarian dishes at these places at reasonable price.

Price Categories

Although you can fine dine in Budapest restaurants at reasonable price, it's good to know in which price category belongs the restaurant you choose to have your meal in. To help you we indicate the price category (prices are per person for a main course without tip) after all the restaurants listed on our pages:

  • very expensive (above 4 000-5 000 or more HUF) - $$$$

  • expensive: main courses cost around 3 000-4 000 HUF - $$$
  • moderate (main courses cost cc. 2 000 HUF or less) - $$

Many restaurants, cafes offer daily menu at affordable price (soup +main course for around 800 - 1000 HUF).

Note that smaller restaurants accept only cash.

Most restaurants display their menu including the prices next to the entrance or in the window so you can view it from outside.

To have a delicious meal you won't necessarily have to go to the most expensive Budapest restaurants. They are mostly very famous places like the Gundel or Kéhli Restaurant where you have to pay for the name as well.

How to Choose a Budapest Restaurant?

Of course I recommend you trying the Hungarian cuisine first. The best way to get to know a nation is to taste its traditional dishes. I can assure you that Hungarian cooking is not all about goulash.

Tipping in Budapest Restaurants

In restaurants we usually give around a 10 % tip to the waiter. When you want to pay for your meal, signal to the waiter. He comes to your table and hands over you the bill.

Review the bill and feel free to tell the waiter if you don't understand something. Usually we don't live the tip on the table, but round up the bill by 10 percent (less or more, depending on your decision).
For example if the bill is 2800, give a waiter 3000.

Note: Please take our restaurant recommendations with a grain of salt. Budapest's restaurant scene is changing very rapidly. Restaurants close down, new ones open; ownership might change along with the quality of food and service. That's why some of the listings on our restaurant pages might not be accurate although we do our best to keep the information up-to-date.
