Budapest Spring Festival (Budapesti Tavaszi Fesztivál)

The Budapest Spring Festival takes place in the last two weeks of March every year. Besides Hungarian artists numerous international stars perform during the two-week event

The largest and most prestigious cultural festival in Budapest attracts many classical music, opera and jazz fans from all around the world.

The festival has developed into one of Europe's major cultural events with a series of opera, concert, ballet and theatrical performances.

You can choose from around 200 events from the festival's rich programme. We've selected a few to give you an impression about Budapest Spring Festival 2009.

There'll be orchestral concerts, chamber evenings, church concerts, opera performaces, musicals, folk dance, exhibitions and a range of other interesting programs. See the selection of programs below.

Orchestral Concerts During the Budapest Spring Festival 2010

Joshua Bell and the Camerata Salzburg conducted by Louis Langrée will perform in the Palace of Arts Béla Bartók National Concert Hall on 20th March at 19.30.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra (26th March 19.30, Palace of Arts Béla Bartók National Concert Hall) and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (29th March, 19.30 Palace of Arts Béla Bartók National Concert Hall)) will also give concerts.

Within the International Theatre Festival the Park by Botho Strauss directed by Róbert Alföldi will be a Hungarian premiere on 20th March at 19.00 in the National Theatre (Bajor Gizi park 1., IX. district).

On 22nd March there'll be a Bartók Evening (at 19.30 in the Palace of Arts Béla Bartók National Concert Hall) with the Miraculous Mandarin and a semi-staged performance of the Bluebeard's Castle featuring singers Ildikó Komlósi and László POlgár accompanied by the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra.

Tickets for orchestral concerts are around 4000-8000 HUF (the cheapest tickets are 1500-300 HUFwhile the most expensive ticket costs 15000 HUF).

Other venues for orchestral concerts include the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, the Ceremonial hall of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on Roosevelt Square at the Chain Bridge.


Church Concerts - Budapest Spring Festival 2010

Church concerts will be performed in Matthias Church (e. g. Napoleon ante portas Haydn: Nikolai-messe, Hob. XXII:6, Haydn: Paukenmesse, Hob. XXII:9 on 28th March, at 20.00) in Buda Castle District.


Opera, Operetta, Musical - Budapest Spring Festival 2010

Puccini's Turandot will be performed on 22nd March and on 28th March at 19.00 in the Hungarian State Opera House. Train departs from Nyugati Pályaudvar (Western Railway Sttaion) at 18.00.
Ticket price:
8500 HUF which includes the price of the train trip. After the performance train will take back guests to Nyugati Pályaudvar.

Philemon and Baucis by Haydn will be a Hungarian premiere on 21st March at 19.00 on a unique venue in the Hungarian Railway Museum.
Tickets:
1000-16900 HUF

Die Bajadere operetta by Kálmán Emmerich will also be a premiere on 20th March at 19.00 in the Budapest Operetta Theatre (Nagymező utca 17., VI.district, trams 4,6 Oktogon stop).


Folk Dance Progrmas - Budapest Spring Festival 2010

The Dancing Master dance show directed by Jolán Foltin will be performed on 2nd April at 19.00 in Thália Theatre (Nagymező utca 22-24., trams 4,6 Oktogon stop)

The 25th National Dance Houes Gathering & Arts and Crafts Fair will be held on 4th-5th April in the Papp László Sport Arena.

This is a folk festival with lots of folk music, folk art, and dancing performed by both professionals and amateurs. The aim of the festival is introducing the rich folk heritage of the Hungarian people living in the Carpathian basin and the ethnic minorities of Hungary.


Japanese Days During the Budapest Spring Festival 2010

Japanese art (origami, ikebana, koto playing, kanji drawing) will be in the focus on two consecutive days: on 21st, and on 22nd March between 11.00-17.00 in the Thália Theatre. Admission is free of charge.
