You must visit the Festival of Folk Arts in Budapest Castle District between 16th and 20th August if you want to find out more about Hungary’s rich folklore and crafts straight from the horse’s mouth.
The Festival is the most significant forum for living folk culture in Hungary.
The most renowned Hungarian artists and craftsmen from different regions of the country will introduce their skills handed down from many generations. In these workshops you can try and learn the trades: e.g. wood carving, making musical instruments, embroidery, pottery making, weaving, smithery, egg painting etc. |
If you’d like to take home traditional Hungarian souvenirs, the fairs at the festival are a good place to buy them.
This year woodcarving will be highlighted. Wood carvers who follow traditional skills but also keep abreast of the times will introduce their trade.
Besides the workshops and fairs there are many other programs to entertain you: artists from all around the world perform folk dances and folk music. Every evening you can dance to a different nation’s folk music.
Children won’t be bored either, there’ll be plenty programs for them as well: puppet-shows, story-telling. In the children’s dance hall they can learn dancing in a playful way.
You won’t stay hungry because gastronomy of the Hungarian countryside will also be introduced.
The event is timed to coincide with our national holiday, St. Stephen’s day on 20th August. On this day craftsmen will have their own parade to revive an old tradition. They’ll also celebrate the new bread with the ceremony of the so called “blessing of the bread”.
