"Rosenstein" near Keleti Railroad station. VII-VIII district
Weak location, yet superb Hungarain Dishes. Unquestionably the best "halaszle" (Hungarian fish soup ) around.
I am talking no nonsense. Although not a "professional gourmet" I have dined in the majority of France's 3 Michelin- starred restaurants, and believe can make at least an "educated guess" as to quality and service.

hemingway

Hemingway is in a beautiful setting in a small park beside a lake. Service and food was excellent, and because it's away from the city centre is not full of tourists and loud gypsy music. We have been 5 times and never been disappointed
Rezkakas is another favouries that we have been visiting for years. Classy and popular with tourists. Food excellent, and the music trio wonderful, who will play anything you care to request

Dinner at Margitkert
There is no question in my mind that the best Goulash (or 'gulyas') in town is that of Margitkert's. They serve it in a kettle and you can get it for one or for two.
Margitkert is always a nice choice, but especially in the summer time when you can enjoy their shady garden.

Very poor restaurant which was over priced and the quality of food not very good. We had the most expensive item on the menu and bits of it were missing.
Owner tries to cheat English diners by seemimg to suggest there is VAT of 10% and no service charge on the bill. This is dishonest as they then demand a tip on top. Other diners were also leaving food which is not a good sign. Entertainment lasted all of 10 minutes and the guy never came close to our table.
As we were recommended this restuarant by the Tourist office we were extreemly disappointed

Nádor Wine Restaurant
by Svend
(Budapest)
Warning! The place is a typical tourist trap. You will be surrounded by tourists, no surprise as it is recommended by different guides. The atmosphere is nice - a wine cellar, brick stone walls, Hungarian live music, etc.. The food is decent, service reasonable, business practice unheard of. You will find a hidden service charge in the middle of your bill! There are several restaurants in Budapest with similar offerings and an honest approach to guests, choose those.

Pesti Sorcsarnok, Budapest V., Vamhaz korut 16
by Richard Clarke
(England UK)
First of all the welcome from a young man named Tamás who was actually pleased to see ten over-50 year olds arrive and made us very welcome and comfortable. His colleague Gabriel and others were equally welcoming.
The food was always good quality, and as there were so many of us we won't go into great details of the actual meals, but all ten enjoyed the food, which was plentiful, varied and excellent value.
The only problem was the seats, but when we did complain, seat covers/cushions were obtained.
On one occasion we all drank for a few hours and the bill was almost unbelievably cheap. Good selection of drinks also.
Open from 11 am til 0100 am.
Recommended by all on the trip.

Rozsadomb Etterem

(Copenhagen, Denmark)
Last week I and my family visited Budapest the fourth time since 2002. We have seen this restaurant before but thought it looked too posh but decided to try it out this time as we lived very close.
It is posh, but with a friendly staff and very nice Hungarian kitchen at reasonable prices for a normal European tourist family of four. Fish (we had flounder and harr) was very good and we had the best coffees during our whole stay.
The wine list had a large selection of good local wines and our waiter was very knowledgeable and helped us pair food and wine nicely. Their speciality 'twelwe egg' noodles were tasty but very filling.
In fact we returned to this restaurant three times during our eight days in Budapest and recommended it to some friends who also liked it.
Drawbacks? It is nicest to sit outside on the terrace as indoors is very formal and the diners usually well dressed locals who looked at the rather scruffy and sweaty tourists with a slight frown. But the second visit we took care and dressed up a bit, thus making the locals not noticing us and the staff were friendly anyhow.
Address: Rózsadomb Étterem, 1020 Budapest, Bimbó út 2.

21 Hungarian Restaurant
by Steve
(NYC, USA)
I've tried several Hungarian restaurants - several from this list. The best hungarian is 21 in the castle. finally a fresh approach and not the heavy greasy food you get in so many places in Hungary. they have some hot shot chef but the place is very casual and great value with a super terrace with the prettiest view. Go for it

The Red Devil
by Carl
(PowaylCalifornia, USA)
Although not IN Budapest the Red Devil was a fairly good place. Located on a peninsula on the Danube. During part of the year, mosquitos can be a problem though. Also got good food at the Citadel on Castle Hill. Good, traditional entertainment too. Nice wines and congenial staff. Very historic location. The Hilton put out good food too and their wine cellar is quite interesting.

For Sale Pub
For Sale (Budapest, Vámház krt. 2., opposite the Central Market Hall) doesn't look like a traditional Hungarian restaurant, and it isn't.
If it wasn't for the great Goulash soup and the peanuts, I wouldn't go there anymore due to the unsmiley service.

Vadrozsa Restaurant
good food but be aware!- they will try to cheat you. I was cheated by 40%. When I told my friend about it we went back and requested an explanation from the owner... It was a "mistake"!
