Shalimar Indian Restaurant

by Craig Evans
(London)

As a Londoner by birth I got hooked on Indian food early on. As my craving for Indian food soon proved to be insuperable during my three-month stint in Budapest I went to see the curry houses Budapest had to offer. The result is as follows:

The upmarket Salaam Bombay with its sleek interior lagged behind my expectations with its unadventurous flavours (I found both the tandooris and the curries were bland to my taste).

The Indigo didn't have the necessary bite either, but was certainly better than the Salaam Bombay. It had an ample variety of fish dishes, though, two of which turned out to be rather good.

Still unhappy with the crop, next time I headed for the Shalimar hidden in a downtown cellar. Well, it was not the dated furniture that impressed me; it was the perfect seasoning of the hariyali tikka, a flavour I had been looking for since my visit to India. Murg lababdar proved to be as great a choice and made the restaurant fit for its laurels.
The waiter was attentive and offered help with the selection of dishes, but he soon realized I was in the know.

Excellent meal. Large portions and reasonably inexpensive. Friendly and helpful waitress, who talked us through the menu. Smoking section upstairs had comfortable couches to relax on once your meal was finished.

India Pirro Restaurant

by Ben Smith
(Cambridge)

The hottest thing in town, India Pirro offers a fascinating variety of authentic Indian cuisine. I was amazed at the quality of the food, the ambience and the service. What also interested me was the fact that they offer a variety of English sports channels. We were lucky to watch the Man U game on ITV, an absolute rarity in Budapest.

The chef, we were given to understand, is a 5 star chef having experience with large hotel chains in India and Singapore. We ordered the Tandoori chicken and a lamb vindaloo which was the best I have tasted outside of the U.K.

Highly recommended!!

Kohinoor Etterem, Wesselenyi utca

by Martin
(UK)

We are British visitors who found this little cellar restaurant by accident whilst actually trying to find the Shalimar. We visited the Shalimar the following night, but in our view the Kohinoor wins hands down. Service was prompt and polite, the atmosphere calm and relaxed with indian and piano music, and the food was well-presented, tasty and reasonably priced. The same comments could apply to the better known Indigo, which we have also visited. The Shalimar, on the other hand, which we eventually found tonight, was by contrast totally lacking in atmosphere, with bland, old-fashioned decor and indifferent service. The food seemed over-priced, and certainly not exceptional. The Kohinoor deserves to be much better known, whilst the Shalimar should look to its laurels!!

Indigo

by Anna
(Milan)

Only one word can define Indigo food: great!
We enjoyed every bit! Portion then are huge but food is so good that you do not manage to leave it on the plate. Very good atmosphere with really kind staff. And if you do not manage, do not worry they ask if you want to take away the left over!
A great dinner !

(Wien, Austria)

The first indian restaurant in the city is still my favorite one. Strong authentic flavor, culinary dishes makes Maharaja the best indian restaurant in Budapest. You must try it:)

Pandzsab Tandoori

by Dan
(Budapest)

Have now been to several Indian restaurants in Budapest and my favourite is Pandzsab. It's not much to look at but when you ask for your curry spicy, they actually make it spicy! Favourite dishes there include the samosas and the kadhi paneer, and they do a mean chili naan. The drinks are priced reasonably so we paid only 7500 Ft for a vegetarian meal for two.

Out of the others, Indigo runs a close second, a classier option with almost as good curry. Maharaja, Kohinoor and Taj Mahal are all very good, though not always that spicy. Shalimar was ok, and most recently Kashmir was a bit disappointing considering some of the reviews I'd read/heard. The curry was very mild, not especially tasty, and one of them slightly watery, and the drinks list was limited and expensive in terms of wine and beer.

Overall, go with Pandzsab (deserves a bigger write up above!) or Indigo!

Indigo Restaurant

It was a pleasant surprise for us to have one of the finest Indian dishes at this restaurant. My Husband and I are originally from India but have settled in London now but honestly we have not had such amazing food till date in London.

The food has authentic Indian taste and touch in it and I would like to praise their chef and not to forget the people serving the food. They really take care of you..........

In short food was........ flavorsome, mouthwatering, appetizing, scrumptious and yummy.............
